Linguistic, Communicative & Cultural Competence
Linguistic competence is the ability to understand and respond effectively to the linguistic needs of an individual or community.
Although linguistic competence is perceived as the basis for communicative competence, it is to be distinguished from linguistic performance, which is the way a language system is used in communication. In other words, communicative competence does not automatically result from linguistic competence.
Communicative competence is essential because it gets the correct message across without any trace of ambiguity. Communicative competence encompasses a speaker’s experience and knowledge, appropriateness of the situation/circumstance, and sensitivity.
Cultural competence is a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system or among professionals that enables effective interactions in a cross-cultural framework.
Cultural competence requires individuals and (their) organizations to, among others:
